Quarantined Comics

a comic-book book-club discussing (some of) the medium's great works.

About the show

Comics aren't just about superheroes in capes. Each week we'll discuss, debate, and nerd out on some of the medium's greatest, latest, and strangest works. From Alan Moore to Uzumaki, to everything in-between, we aim to smash, and talk for far too long on the books we love.

Hosted by reporter/podcaster Ryan Joe and recovering marketer Raman Sehgal. We're setting phasers to...fun?

  • SCOTT PILGRIM ...a twenty-somethings tales of...trying?

    June 19th, 2020  |  Season 1  |  47 mins 20 secs

This week we discuss Scott Pilgrim (by Canadian Bryan Lee O'Malley) - one of Raman's all-time favorite comics...at least when he read it for the first time in my late 20s. A 6-volume indie comic that ran from 2004-2010, Scott Pilgrim tells the tale of the eponymous slacker who lives in Toronto and plays bass guitar in the band Sex Bob-omb. Scott falls in love with American delivery girl Ramona Flowers, but must defeat her seven evil ex's in order to date her. The books were later adapted to a rocking-awesome film directed by Edgar Wright (starring Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and quite a few other famous people) that Ryan saw first. We discuss how well the book holds up now that we're grown ups, and reflect on our own twenty-somethings.

  • SUPERMAN SMASHES THE KLAN ...leaping fascism in a single bound

    June 4th, 2020  |  Season 1  |  50 mins 40 secs

Particularly relevant - we decided to pull forward our review of "Superman SMASHES the Klan" by Gene Luen Yang and Gurihiru. Based on a 1940s radio drama of Superman's fight for truth, justice, and the American way (alongside a Chinese American Family) - AND against the forces of white supremacists. And what better friend to have along for the pod than real-life do-gooder Karl, a Diversity & Inclusion professional at one of the world's top companies. This book smashes - not just fascism - but also conventions of how a meaningful conversation on the nuances of race can be discussed, while also illustrating the realities of the evils we face everyday.

  • KINGDOM COME ...and why Superman is a BAD manager

Kingdom Come was a seminal (Wait, was it seminal? ... Yes. It was) graphic novel when it came out in the 90s. Nearly 20 years later, does the end of the DC Universe hold up?
